J-1 Program Information
The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to provide foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences. Additionally, the exchange visitor program encourages Americans to participate in educational and cultural programs in other countries.

J-1 Visa students are exempt from paying FICA (OASDI and Medicare) taxes. IRS Publication 515 explains withholding procedures.

Other Important Documents
All U.S. employers are responsible for retaining a complete copy of Form I-94 for each individual they hire for employment in the United States.  The employer must verify the employment documents presented by the employee and record the document information on the Form I-94.
